Are you a DOM who is a Leader, or a Leader who is a DOM? Some of us are wired by God as leaders who are now serving the Lord as an Associational Leader. Others of us have been called to serve an association and are having to lead other leaders (pastors, church leaders), though we do not consider ourselves gifted leaders.
A DOM is a leader by virtue of the position. What kind of leader are you? Do your pastors consider you a leader? Do you consider yourself a leader? If so, what kind of leader are you? I believe an effective Associational Leader could be described as follows.

1. A Growing Leader
We should be growing spiritually. Are you growing as a Christian? We should never “arrive” spiritually or vocationally. 1 Tim. 4:7b …train yourself in godliness (CSB). Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise later in life (Pr. 19:20). Someone said years ago, “Leaders are readers.” I agree. It is important that we read God’s Word daily and meditate on it. It is also important to read books, blogs, and magazines that inform, inspire, equip, and edify. Read 20 minutes a day or a chapter a week in some book. Listen to podcasts. Attend at least one conference or convention for your personal and/or ministerial growth each year (Like the SBCAL!). Model leadership for your pastors.
2. A Servant Leader
Jesus tells us in Mark 10:45, For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. If Jesus came to serve, should we not be servant leaders also? We are here to serve Christ by serving our pastors and churches diligently and sacrificially.
3. An Humble Leader
Pr. 15:33, The fear of the Lord is what wisdom teaches, and humility comes before honor. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6b.
