Evaluating Church Worship Services

As a DOM, I worship in a different church most every Sunday.  I pray for specific pastors and churches each day, and for those I worship with on a given Sunday.  I served as a pastor for several years, so I can relate to how difficult it can be to evaluate and improve on various aspects of the worship service.  (See some of my other blogs for helps with preaching.)

It is easy to get into a rut and to not want to change things for fear of upsetting someone or messing up what is currently working.  I am not saying all of the trends are to my liking, or that they are right.  But it is helpful to keep abreast of changes and then to prayerfully consider what impact, if any, these trends might have for me and my church.

A pastor and worship leader should want to glorify God in all aspects of the worship service, as well as minimize distractions to worship.  We also want our church to be considered a guest-friendly congregation.  Are we training our volunteers to be on the lookout for guests and how to respond with timely information and answers to their questions?  Are we evaluating the service, the announcements, the bulletin, etc., and being willing to make changes where needed from time to time, or are we coasting on auto-pilot?

To the praise of His glory,
Ray
